Eagle Express 8/28/2021

I hope that you are doing well this week, staying healthy and cool! The first day of school is Wednesday, September 8th!

  • Open Houses:  We will host open houses for all grade levels this week.  The purpose of these open houses is for students to come to Godwin to orient themselves with the layout of the building following their class schedules.
    • Students will pick up paper copies of their schedules with school maps on the back.
    • There will be no formal meetings or orientation activities during the open houses.  We will be doing multiple orientation activities with all students during the first weeks of school to acclimate to Godwin and in-person learning.
    • We will not be collecting fees at open houses.
    • All high school students in Henrico County will be receiving a brand new laptop this year if they have turned in their laptops from last year. We will not be giving out laptops during the open houses because the laptops will not be shipped in time because of production lag time.  We plan to distribute laptops to students during the first week of school.
    • Parents and family members will have the opportunity to join the PTSO and Godwin Athletic Association.  The PTSO commons cave will also be open for folks to purchase spirit wear.
    • We will be distributing 2020-2021 yearbooks during the open house times.
    • It will be important for folks to come on the nights for their grade levels, since we are trying to avoid larger crowds.  We also ask that families be mindful of the number of folks that come for the open house and consider only the Godwin student and parents attending.  Please also note that the senior stadium parking lot closest to Pump Road will be closed this week as they are finishing repaving it, but there should be plenty of parking in our other lots.
      • Seniors:  Monday, August 30th from 4-6 p.m.
      • Juniors:  Tuesday, August 31st from 4-6 p.m.
      • Sophomores:  Wednesday, September 1st from 4-6 p.m.
      • Freshmen:  Thursday, September 2nd from 4-6 p.m.
  • Online Services, School Forms, and Information:  Here is the Henrico County Public Schools site for all things related to online services and resources.
    • Please use Rycor to complete forms online through your PowerSchool Parent Portal.  The deadline for completing online forms is September 12th.  Most Godwin families use this route to complete school forms.
    • We expect bus routes to appear in PowerSchool Parent Portal on Tuesday, August 31st (after 9:30 a.m.) and schedules in PowerSchool on Friday, September 3rd (after 9:30 a.m.).
    • Here is a guide to help you in paying school fees.  Families can pay fees online or students can bring in money in-person during the first few weeks of school to pay any fees.  Fees are limited this year, and there will be no laptop computer fee charged to students.
    • The basic school lunch is free to all students this year, but students may buy a la carte items in the cafeteria.  The website www.myschoolbucks.com allows a families to load money into a lunch account online and also to monitor how and on what the student is spending the money.  If your family thinks that you may qualify for benefits attached to free/reduced lunch/breakfast, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Here is the link to apply for free or reduced lunch.
  • Town Hall Meeting:  We will hold a virtual town hall meeting through Microsoft Teams on Tuesday, August 31st at 7:00 p.m.  Anyone in the Godwin community is welcome to attend the online meeting where we will discuss information for the start of school and answer questions that folks may have.  We will send the link for the town hall meeting on Tuesday morning.
  • Do You Have Questions?:  If you have particular questions that you would like answered about anything, you can use this form to ask them, and we will answer them on our important school information document, or we will reach out to you individually.
  • Godwin Parent/Family Organizations:  We have fantastic support from our Godwin parents and families!  Please consider joining these organizations.
    • PTSO Please join the PTSO for $5 per member.  Students may join the PTSO too!   Here is a link to the PTSO website.  All of your dues go directly to Godwin.  In past years, the PTSO has replaced every water fountain at Godwin with a bottle-filler fountains, a new sound system in the auditorium, new features to enhance safety and security, and much more!
    • Godwin Athletic Association:  Godwin Athletic Association (“GAA”) Membership for the 2021-2022 school year is now open.  Let’s continue to come together and support our student athletes.  The GAA raises money to benefit athletes and the facilities on which they practice and play. Our goal is to promote positive community relations with parents, administration, students, alumni and the greater Godwin community to make sure our athletic programs are the best they can be.  Fall sports are underway! We hope to have at least 50% of all team members join – this should be a no brainer since the GAA exists to support our student-athletes. And while our higher level memberships provide more value, the lowest level starts at just $40 so we know this is attainable!  The GAA raises money to benefit athletes and the facilities on which they practice and play. Our goal is to promote positive community relations with parents, administration, students, alumni and the greater Godwin community to make sure our athletic programs are the best they can be. By joining the GAA, you are supporting all our athletes and coaches, whether it be fall, winter or spring sports. Click here to join online.
