ATTENDANCE UPDATES | Contacts/Pick-Up Lists: Please make sure your student’s pick-up list is up to date by updating the Contacts listed in PowerSchool. You can do this by logging in to your Parent Portal account. Anyone coming to pick up a student for early dismissal MUST be listed in PowerSchool. If someone is not listed in PowerSchool, we will not be able to call the student down. EARLY DISMISSAL REMINDER: The cut off time for early dismissals is 2:30pm. Transportation: If your student’s bus is running late, please refer to the Parent Portal Bus App or contact the Transportation Office at 804-261-9401. The attached fliers include step by step instructions for setting up the app to track your student’s bus. |

COUNSELOR'S CORNER | VA Kindness Week Elko Middle School will be celebrating Virginia Kindness Week February 10 - 14! We will be celebrating all week with Kindness Bingo and Kindness Candy Grams. Please encourage your students to engage in acts of kindness during the week. Annual Career Plan The week of February 10th and 19th school counseling will be helping our 7th and 8th graders create their Annual Career Plan. During these lessons we discuss with students their HS diploma track and their plans post high school. These will be emailed to parents later in the school year. Elko Learning Lab During Q3 the learning lab will be offering grade recovery for students who earned a F in a core class during Q1 or Q2. This will only be offered during Q3. The Learning Lab will start on Tuesday, November 12th. It will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays either before school (7-8am) or after school (3:30 to 4:30pm). COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES (ELKO AND SANDSTON COMMUNITIES | Girls Who Code Girls Who Code, is a coding program open to girls in the 6-8th grade. Girls will join us on Wednesdays from 3:30pm-5:00pm to learn the basic foundations of coding from experienced instructors. The girls will together to create a project of their choosing to present at our annual Black Girl Showcase. Participants and families can read more about the program here. Girl Ambassador Program Our Girl Ambassador program is a workforce and career readiness program. That prepares our girls for the next steps after high school through STEM workshops as well as connecting them with knowledgeable professionals in and outside of our community through hands-on workshops and training. Once girls successfully complete the training they are eligible for a paid summer internship. Parents can learn more about the program here and sign up for an information session here. Girl Action Team x Virginia Museum of Fine Arts This program will engage our girls through social change and women empowerment and creating art. This program is open to 9th-12 grade girls and will begin on February 5th from 4:30pm-6:30pm, an information session will happen on January 22. Parents can register here for a tour of the museum and to learn about the program. All participants will receive a free student membership to the museum and be entered for a chance to win gift cards.
